Coordinator Castillo stays calm as Eagles struggle
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - If embattled Eagles defensive coordinator Juan Castillo is feeling the heat from his unit blowing three consecutive fourth-quarter leads, he's clearly not showing it.Castillo, in his weekly press conference, remained calm and confident that his defense will improve and still mentioned the words Super Bowl, despite the Eagles' 1-3 start to what was supposed to be a dream season."There are some things we need to take care of, and there are some things I need to take care of,'' Castillo said. "It will get better, believe me. We're going to get this thing turned around and when we do everyone will be happy again.''Philadelphia, in last place in the NFC East, and two games behind the Giants and Redskins, meets Buffalo (3-1) on Sunday.Asked why he was so confident after the team's dreadful start, and how for the first time in franchise history they allowed three consecutive opponents to come back in the fourth quarter, Castillo simply smiled."I've been through this before and I've had success,'' he said. "We believe in ourselves. I can tell you this, every week we get better and better and better. Look, we've been here 12 years and our record speaks for itself. We're going to get better. We're going to correct the problems.''Under coach Andy Reid, this is the third time the Eagles have started the season 1-3. Neither of the first two rebounded to make the postseason. In 1999, Reid's rookie year, the Eagles finished 5-11 after a 1-3 start and in 2007, the team needed to win its last three games of the season to finish 8-8 after the same open.Castillo, however, was on former Eagles coach Ray Rhodes' staff in 1995, when the team began 1-3 and finished 10-6 to earn a wild-card spot. That team even won a wild-card game. This year is more startling because of the major offseason acquisitions, especially on defense where defensive end Jason Babin, defensive tackle Cullen Jenkins, and cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha were all signed as free agents and cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie was acquired from Arizona for quarterback Kevin Kolb. However, in three consecutive weeks, the Eagles lost late leads to the Falcons, Giants and 49ers. San Francisco even trailed, 23-3, in the third quarter.Castillo, a longtime offensive line coach, was a shocking hire as defensive coordinator to replace the fired Sean McDermott. And now, those critics appear to have some material to back their stance up."I don't think you can put it all on Juan,'' said veteran defensive end Juqua Parker, who has played for three defensive coordinators with the Eagles. "You can't say it's all Juan's fault if that's what people are saying."It's been a team effort. We're all in this together.''The Eagles defense ranks 16th in overall defense, 30th against the run and 24th in points allowed. While the unit has a league-high 15 sacks, it has forced just four turnovers (two interceptions, two fumbles). Is the Eagles personnel, despite all the Pro Bowl additions, good enough?"Oh, yes sir,'' Castillo said. "We have the players.''Then is it the schemes?"We have some things that need to be corrected and they will be corrected,'' he said. "Maybe I've put too much on some players. But the problems we have will be fixed."Remember, we're only in Week 4. The team that wins the Super Bowl is the one that gets hot in December and January.''---NOTES: The only two Eagles to miss practice were tackle Jason Peters (hamstring) and defensive end Trent Cole (calf). Both are expected to miss at least a few weeks. ... Darryl Tapp, coming back from a pectoral injury, is expected to start in place of Cole if he's healthy. Kin Dunlap will start in place of Peters. ... Buffalo is undefeated at home this season.

Jets' defense focused on stopping Brady, Welker
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) - Antonio Cromartie dares Tom Brady to throw in his direction all day.Go ahead, the New York Jets cornerback says. He's ready for the challenge."I hope I'm a target this game,'' Cromartie said with a smile. "I want to be a target every game.''Well, he better be careful what he wishes for, especially with the way the New England Patriots' offense is playing. The struggling Jets (2-2) have to figure out how to stop Brady, Wes Welker and the high-scoring Patriots (2-2) on Sunday, and know it won't be easy - whether Cromartie is up to the task or not."We use the phrase, `chasing ghosts,' and sometimes you have to do that,'' defensive coordinator Mike Pettine said Thursday. "You don't really know what their formations are going to be, what their personnel groupings are going to be and you might work against something all week and not see it, see something totally different. So you have to be very flexible in your approach when you play New England.''The Patriots are ranked No. 1 in overall offense, along with being the top passing team in the NFL. Their running game isn't too shabby, either, ranking ninth overall. And that's what's making things so tough for opponents early on: Will they pass or run?"They were tough enough when they were one-dimensional,'' Pettine said. "Now having the threat of running the football certainly presents a problem.''Not that the Jets are intimidated, of course."You realize he's one of the great quarterbacks of this generation,'' linebacker Aaron Maybin said. "At the same time, nobody's going to be out there with their spectator hat on and wanting to give him praise for how great he is. We want to go out there and make it hell for him.''That's much easier said than done, as the numbers show. Brady is off to a sensational start, throwing for a league-leading 1,553 yards and 13 touchdowns, while Welker already has 40 catches - 13 more than Dallas' Jason Witten, who ranks second in the NFL. Throw in a running game that's averaging nearly 123 yards a game, and that's a lot to deal with for opposing defenses. The Jets are No. 2 against the pass, though, but are a stunningly low 28th against the run. New York typically has used a smaller lineup with more defensive backs against the Patriots."I don't know if that plan will be able to hold up for the entire game,'' Pettine said. "So our menu is a little fuller this week because they are a flavor-of-the-week offense and it's smart because it's typically something you haven't practiced against.''It all starts with Brady, of course, and putting pressure on him. Rex Ryan's team has done a pretty good job of that in his five previous games against the Patriots as Jets coach. New York has won three of those matchups, including in the playoffs in January when the Jets sacked him five times."If you just play standard coverage against him, you've got no chance,'' Ryan said. "I mean, zero. You better hope for a hurricane or something because that might be your only chance. Quite honestly, I've been in the sideline wishing there was a hurricane because he's that kind of guy. He's as good as it gets right now.''The Jets players agree, and they all respect what Brady can do on the field - and that includes Cromartie, who made headlines in the playoffs when he called the Patriots quarterback an expletive and then said earlier this week that those comments still stand. The Jets aren't revealing their defensive strategy, but Ryan said he's "sure'' All-Pro cornerback Darrelle Revis will match up with Welker at times. Cromartie might be on him, too. And, who knows who else? It might take a few guys to shut him down."It's him and Tom,'' Revis said. "They have a 1-2 punch with each other, great chemistry. They work well together. He's got 40 catches already, over 600 yards, so he's Tom's go-to guy. He's always looking for him. He's tough in the slot. He's probably the toughest receiver to cover in the slot.''Oh, and then the Patriots also have Deion Branch, Chad Ochocinco and tight end Rob Gronkowski to contend with."To beat the hell out of their receivers, that's our game plan on the outside,'' Cromartie said. "It's to try to mess up their timing routes as much as we can.''Or, Brady can turn around and hand it to New England's three-headed backfield with BenJarvus Green-Ellis, Stevan Ridley and Danny Woodhead."Coach Ryan said it best: If anybody's got as good a formula for trying to beat the Patriots, it's us,'' said Maybin, a newcomer to this rivalry who saw plenty of the Patriots during his first two seasons in Buffalo. "We've been able to have some success defensively in the past.''That certainly doesn't make the Jets less concerned heading into this game. They know Brady, coach Bill Belichick and the rest of the Patriots have had that playoff loss in the back of their minds for months."The easy thing to say is, `Well it worked the last time we played them,' and then just blow the dust off of that one and just use it,'' Pettine said. "I know there were more than a few days in Foxborough, whether it was over the lockout or since the season started, preparing for our defense, knowing that we had success against them in the playoff game."It's a challenge for us to make sure that we kind of forge ahead with some new things, but at the same time, not get away from what's been successful against them in the past.''
49ers' NFL-best turnover ratio is no accident
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) - Justin Smith's game-saving strip of Philadelphia Eagles receiver Jeremy Maclin showed everything the San Francisco 49ers want on defense: heart, hustle and smarts. All of it is part of the 49ers plan.San Francisco's ball-hawking defense has 11 takeaways this season to push the team's turnover ratio to plus-eight, which is tied with Detroit for the NFL's best. The remarkable turnaround under new coach Jim Harbaugh and defensive coordinator Vic Fangio is no accident. The 49ers (3-1) spend time each week watching videos and photos of the running backs and receivers they'll face, learning their tendencies and bad ball-carrying habits. The turnover ratio is one of the biggest reasons the Niners lead the NFC West by two games already, and they hope to continue that success Sunday when Tampa Bay (3-1) comes to Candlestick Park."We watch a little highlight reel of how guys carry the ball,'' said safety Dashon Goldson, who recovered Maclin's fumble with 2:06 left to seal the 24-23 comeback victory at Philadelphia. "We show a lot of those guys and how careless they are with the football. Some of the guys we've faced, we knew the opportunities were there.''For all the chatter about the offense's second-half improvement against the Eagles, the most noticeable strides in San Francisco's young season have come on defense. The Niners finished 16th in the league last year with a minus-one turnover ratio under Mike Singletary, a Hall of Fame linebacker whom San Francisco's brass believed could bring a defense-first mentality. Instead, that never materialized. Singletary was fired with one week left in the season, the 49ers finished 6-10 and missed the playoffs for the eighth straight year.Fangio's pass-rushing 3-4 scheme has been a welcome change around 49ers headquarters.Players believe it allows them more freedom, and there might be no greater example of that than Smith's strip. The 290-pound defensive tackle chased the speedy Maclin down from behind and popped the ball loose near the sideline, a play that already has become a lasting image this season for 49ers faithful."For him to have that type of energy and hustle at that time of the game, knowing how his body had to be feeling at that point, speaks volumes about him as a person,'' Fangio said. "That's a play that, I think, that's the defensive equivalent of `The Catch.' Now `The Catch' happened in an NFC Championship game, which added to the luster. This was the fourth regular-season game."But it was a tremendous effort.''Smith's strip might not be a fair comparison to the famous reception by Dwight Clark from Joe Montana to beat the Cowboys in the 1982 NFC   game at Candlestick. Fangio, however, hopes it leaves an impression on the rest of his players that his methodology works."We've tried to make it a big point of emphasis for our team this year,'' Fangio said.Smith credited the advanced film work by the coaching staff during the week for the forced fumble. When Maclin took the screen pass from Michael Vick and sprinted 17 yards, Smith never stopped giving chase. He said after the game he knew just how loosely Maclin carried the ball, what arm the receiver preferred to hold the ball and the best moment to reach out and punch it loose."You stick your arm through there and hope the ball's there,'' Smith said. "It's a drill you work on every day. It kind of becomes repetition. You're really not trying to get the tackle. You're trying to get the ball out. And luckily enough, it was there.''Maybe it's not luck at all.NOTES: Fangio said DT Isaac Sopoaga is "highly unlikely'' to play Sunday because of a staph infection. Ricky Jean-Francois is expected to start in his place. ... CBs Shawntae Spencer (toe) and Tramaine Brock (right hand) did not participate in practice during the portion open to reporters. Spencer is hopeful he can play against Tampa Bay, while Brock will likely be a game-day decision.---Antonio Gonzalez can be reached at: http:///agonzalezAP

Before that point, he'd been a relative unknown: a walk-on at Wisconsin who started two seasons before going undrafted in 2005. "I used to hear that I wasn't big enough or fast enough to be an every-down safety in the league," said Leonhard, who returned punts in college and once won a campus slam-dunk contest. "People thought I didn't have the agility for the position."What Leonhard had were skills scouts couldn't measure with a scale or a stopwatch. He had the ability to dissect plays quickly as they unfolded and the intelligence to understand best how to defend them. "He has good eyes," said Thurman. "People who don't know the game don't realize how much it helps when you can see things happening faster than the next guy. Jim's vision allows him to play bigger than his size."The more Leonhard played in Buffalo, the more he opened doors for himself. When the Ravens invited him to a three-day minicamp in 2008, they were basically taking a flier on him. But he made enough plays to earn a contract, and he proved himself even more when replacing injured safety Dawan Landry for 13 games that season. Along with posting solid numbers -- 69 tackles, a sack and an interception return for a touchdown -- Leonhard was so savvy that during one game that he was calling out the opposing team's plays before they were run.The Jets signed Leonhard to a three-year deal after that season. Jets coach (and former Ravens defensive coordinator) Rex Ryan primarily valued Leonhard's intelligence in a blitz-heavy scheme that has ranked among the league's top pass defenses since 2009."You have to be very cerebral back there," Pettine said. "Jimmy and Eric [Smith, the Jets' other safety] are prime examples of that. You need to be able to stay on top of things because the game is so complicated now. There are a lot of moving parts because teams don't just line up and run at you. There are stacks, bunches, shifts, motion and tight ends and running backs lining up in places they never did before. It's a lot to keep up with."Dealing with mismatchesOffenses also are using weapons that give them a greater advantage. For example, the Patriots use two athletic tight ends (6-6, 265-pound Rob Gronkowski and 6-1, 245-pound Aaron Hernandez) to create mismatches. Newsome recently a watched a Green Bay game and was stunned by a back-shoulder catch that Packers tight end Jermichael Finley, who's listed at 6-5 and 247 pounds, pulled off against perfect coverage by Saints strong safety Roman Harper. One thought filled Newsome's head on that play: How do you stop that?Falcons tight end Tony Gonzalez joked that there are so many agile tight ends that teams may have to start scouting basketball games for safety talent. "Maybe they should find some 2-guard types, 6-foot-4 guys who can match up with tight ends," he said.[+] EnlargeGeoff Burke/US PresswireWith the crackdown on dangerous hits, the physical part of the position has become even tougher. Kenny Phillips, left, was fined for this hit on Fred Davis. But defenders of any size face another disadvantage with the league's crackdown on violence. The possibility of taking a hefty fine for a vicious hit has hamstrung safeties to the point that, as Rolle said, "You feel like you're playing with both hands tied behind your back."Many Giants players were especially upset when safety Kenny Phillips was fined $10,000 for a hit on Redskins tight end Fred Davis in Week 1. Phillips' shoulder did collide with Davis' head, but the contact resulted because another Giants defender was dragging Davis down on the pass play. "The toughest thing about this position now is the physical part," said Denver Broncos safety and 16-year veteran Brian Dawkins. "Coaches tell you that you have to change your strike zone, but we don't play this game in slow-motion."The crackdown on violence already has reached a point that one AFC coach said it has been discussed in his defensive meetings. "We've had people say that you'll see more low hits," the coach said. "The receivers won't like and it used to be taboo to go after a guy's legs, but that's where we're headed. Safeties have to get the ball out somehow."Pettine said he wouldn't be surprised to see more small safeties, like Leonhard, finding playing time. That move has merit, even if durability might become a concern. Bob Sanders, a 5-8, 206-pound defender, was the 2007 NFL Defensive Player of the Year, but he has played in only 11 games in the past four years because of injuries."You will get to the point where you're playing with four cornerbacks out there," Pettine said. "The day of the true safety is about over because of the speed of the game. When we're looking at safeties in the draft, once you get past the no-brainer guys -- like Eric Berry -- we're looking at slower college cornerbacks. Because right now, safeties are becoming like fullbacks on offense. They're becoming extinct."Until that day comes, Leonhard will embrace the opportunities that have come his way. "I think teams are getting smarter," Leonhard said. "People are now saying they don't care what the guy playing safety looks like. They just want him to get the job done."

The 12th overall pick of the NFL draft, Fairley broke his foot in training camp, causing him to miss the entire preseason and the team's first four games. Lions coach Jim Schwartz sidestepped questions regarding Fairley's potential availability earlier in the week. But according to the source, Fairley has told friends and family -- who are traveling to Detroit for the game -- that he expects to participate in a situational capacity.  NFC North blogESPN's Kevin Seifert writes about all things NFC North in his division blog.NFL Nation blog Fairley returned to the practice field on Tuesday and participated in position drills, according to multiple reports.  Schwartz told the Detroit media that even if Fairley is healthy enough to play against the Bears on Monday night it's unlikely he'll make a significant contribution. "I think when we do get him back, there will be a progression to that," Schwartz told the Detroit media. "You're talking about a guy that played in zero preseason games, and you always have a progression with those. We won't go from zero to 100 without taking some steps along the way." A 2010 winner of the Lombardi Award, Fairley was considered one of the leaders on defense for Auburn's BCS championship team. Fairley contributed 60 tackles for Auburn last season, and led the team with 24 tackles for lost yardage and 11.5 sacks.

Fuller played from 2005-10 with the Tennessee Titans, where Lions coach Jim Schwartz used to be the defensive coordinator. Fuller started five games over the last three seasons with Tennessee. The Lions claimed McClendon off waivers earlier this season, but he didn't play. McClendon played in four games last season for the Indianapolis Colts.

He shrugged off talk about a losing season or whether Indianapolis will be in the running to draft Andrew Luck.Too early for that, he says.I think you have to have hope until the doctors rule you out. We're having a lot of injuries so if they come to me and say they have to make a move, I won't fight them on that.-- Peyton ManningAnd too early to know whether he has any shot at playing for Indy again this season.Still, Manning was full of smiles Thursday as he said his recovery from his latest neck surgery is going well. He is clearly eager to be back down among his teammates on game day instead of up in the press box."I had two hot dogs up there in Tampa and Indianapolis," Manning cracked, referring to the past two weeks. "But the press box gave me a bad vibe."Perhaps that's because Manning had grown weary of the Colts' four-game losing streak to open the season and the second-guessing that has come with it. Many have wondered how healthy Manning will be when he returns or whether he'll ever resemble the four-time league MVP again. There are indications he just might.Manning has taken on a larger role with his team since the surgery Sept. 8, the third time in 19 months he went under the knife for a neck injury. He has been involved in team meetings, strolling briskly around the practice fields and even advising coaches and players, including the two guys trying to replace him as best they can.Until this week, doctors had barred him from going anywhere near the sideline during games.Manning said the decision to ease that restriction demonstrates the recovery is going well, well enough to keep him optimistic that he could even make it back, at least to practice, later this season."I think you have to have hope until the doctors rule you out," he said. "We're having a lot of injuries so if they (the Colts) come to me and say they have to make a move, I won't fight them on that."The good Lord is calling my plays and I'm not allowed to audible at this point, so I have to listen to the doctors," he added.Bill Polian, the vice chairman, and Chris Polian, the general manager, want to keep Manning on the active roster as long as possible so he can at least return to practice this season. Team owner Jim Irsay believes Manning could be back to practice in December. The Colts have desperately missed their leader. The offense has struggled to score touchdowns or dictate the tempo, and it's left the Colts in an 0-4 hole for the first time since 1998. They need a win Sunday against Kansas City (1-3) to avoid their first 0-5 start since 1997.AFC South blogESPN's Paul Kuharsky writes about all things AFC South in his division blog.Blog network: NFL Nation"You know I'm the only guy to be 0-4 on this team, and what a thrilling win that one over the Chargers was, right?" Manning recalled, referring to his first NFL victory. "Was that the fifth game? Yeah I thought so, so I'll be like all true Colts' fans, hoping for a win Sunday."Manning said the current plan is to take X-rays every four weeks so doctors can monitor how he is healing. He confirmed that he was doing more in terms of activities this week, though he declined to get into specifics."He's getting better," coach Jim Caldwell said. "He's working hard on his rehab and is doing everything the doctors are asking him to do."Still, Indy's sour start has prompted talk about the Colts possibly joining the sweepstakes to draft Luck, the Stanford quarterback, next year. If that happened, Luck, who has attended and helped at Manning's annual summer quarterback camp, would become the eventual successor to the Colts' career passing leader.Manning downplayed such talk, saying it's too early to talk about how the Colts will ultimately fare this season. In the meantime, Kerry Collins, Manning's original replacement, is still trying to recover from a concussion he sustained when he was hit by Steelers' linebacker James Farrior."When I look back over my (NFL) career, I can probably remember having a half-dozen or more small ones," Collins said. "I've never had a lot of big ones and this one has hung around longer than any of them."Collins did individual work at Wednesday's practice and was expected to do the same Thursday but still has not been cleared to play. Curtis Painter, who threw two TD passes against Tampa Bay on Monday night, is preparing to make his second straight start this weekend.Manning is still trying to get used to being out after making 227 consecutive starts, including postseason games -- the second-longest streak by an NFL quarterback behind only Brett Favre. He's just excited to be getting close to the action again this weekend."It's a new experience for me," Manning said. "People ask, how are you handling it? I'm learning."Notes Colts safety Melvin Bullitt was scheduled to have surgery Friday on his right shoulder. Bullitt has already been placed on injured reserve, ending his season. ... Defensive tackle Eric Foster, who dislocated his right ankle in a gruesome scene during Monday night's loss at Tampa, was scheduled to return to Indianapolis on Thursday afternoon, two days after undergoing season-ending surgery in Tampa.
